Restaurant food? Healthy? I鈥檇 say none. Especially if you鈥檙e on a diet.

Restaurants food needs to cook fast which is much faster with fat (they use a lot of bacon) than with water or hot air.

When I cook, I can wash my chicken legs and thighs (I only like dark meat) then dry them, then cover them with my favorite herbs and spices (paprika, chili, garlic, onion, thyme, salt and pepper are good companions for rotisserie chicken), then use my rotisserie for 45 minutes to cook my chicken which will taste delicious with no added fat and will be low calorie and healthy if you don鈥檛 eat the skin. White meat is even better, calorie wise, if you like chicken breasts, but I don鈥檛 like white meat.

If I were a restaurant, I鈥檇 go out of business if I needed an hour to prepare chicken.

Now鈥ive me a stick of butter and some bacon, and I鈥檒l cook anything much faster.

Don鈥檛 be fooled by the name of the dish. Spinach are great, artichoke are great but a spinach %26amp; artichoke dip appetizers at 1530 calories is like wondering what on earth did they put in there?

A 4oz baked potato is about 100 calories (those microwavable ones are a genial invention, they鈥檙e already cleaned, wrapped and you just stick one in the microwave for a few minutes), 125 calories if you eat the skin, but a restaurant baked potato at Applebee鈥檚 is 380 calories鈥aybe it鈥檚 a giant baked potato?!

A grilled shrimps 鈥榥 spinach salad, without dressing, is 720 calories鈥ithout dressing鈥here does the calorie come from then? I bet there is bacon in there and that the portion sizes are more like family size.

If I make a salad at home, including the dressing (vinaigrette with olive oil), I鈥檒l end up with a very fulfilling 250/300 calories salad.

I would suggest that you go online and look at the menu, and then choose what you鈥檇 like to eat, staying away from anything fried and favoring steamed food. Sometimes, restaurants justify their high calorie/high fat entrees by pairing them with steamed veggies like broccolis and carrots. Maybe you could only order the steamed veggies while eating some fish.

Once you find what you like on the menu, go to CalorieKing.com to find out about the calories and contents so you know what to avoid.

When I go to a restaurant, I research it online and know what I want before I get there, not just because of healthy food but because of food critics and comments from people who ate there, and what is that particular restaurant specialty and special dish. Some restaurants have a chef, and that chef cannot do everything, but s/he will do that particular dish, particularly well so the restaurant gets good ratings from food critics. That dish is what you want to order when you eat there.

Don鈥檛 let the high calorie/high fat/high sodium Applebee鈥檚 food prevent you from having an enjoyable family dinner. You can put your diet on hold for the occasion, and enjoy eating something succulent that you would never eat otherwise, maybe because you鈥檙e on a diet or maybe because you don鈥檛 know how to cook it and you don鈥檛 know anybody who would know how to cook it. Even if it takes you a week to recuperate, family time is to be cherished and should be a priority over how many ounces you gained just because you had a restaurant meal. Family time is food for the soul, you need that too.

Just be aware that in the US, restaurant serving sizes are family sizes. Ask for a doggie bag with your dish so you can box half of it and eat the rest later鈥r you can share a dish with someone. I usually eat what I can and then put the leftovers in a doggy bag (more like a box) and sometimes, I get my next day lunch and dinner out of it.

Some restaurants will bring me my order of pastas, and I get a huge plate in front of me that looks like what I would serve a family of four. A pasta serving size is half a cup to 2/3 of a cup but you get two whole cups in your big plate in restaurants.

I like fancy, expensive restaurants with a chef and normal serving sizes like in France so I don鈥檛 need a doggie bag and having to eat leftovers tomorrow because I don鈥檛 have a dog.

In cheaper restaurants (family restaurants) I get annoyed of having to pay for 2 or 3 times the food my stomach could handle. Why can鈥檛 I pay half price and get half that huge meal?

I could get normal serving sizes in the kids鈥?menu but anything in there is fried or is a cheeseburger or some macaroni and cheese鈥ow come kids don鈥檛 get to eat healthy in restaurants?

Then cheaper restaurants have big people eating there. Looking at an obese person eating a family size pasta dish (they never need a doggie bag)鈥hey鈥檙e not even talking or socializing, just eating鈥hat is not very appetizing.
